Mancs has gone. The 13-year-old German shepherd dog who was ’Hungary’s most famous rescue dog’ passed away on Sunday at the age of 13. Mancs, whose name in Hungarian means Paw, has saved many people (among them lots of children) all over the world when he and his owner Laszlo Lehoczki (part of the Spider Rescue Team) travelled to places of natural disasters to help find and rescue people. Once when a severe earthquake hit Turkey, Mancs managed to find a 3-year-old girl alive under the debris days after the disaster. He has ’worked’ in many other countries as well including Columbia, Italy, Egypt, India and Venezuela.

He was the first rescue dog who has a bronze statue erected for him in his hometown Miskolc.
Recently he has been retired due to his old age.

We will never forget you, dear Mancs.

Today on the 23rd of October 2006, we, Hungarians celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Hungarian revolution of 1956 which started on this day half a century ago. We recall with much love the memories of the martyrs and all those people who went to the streets because they wanted freedom and a better life both for themselves and the generations to come.
I feel proud to be a Hungarian.
